Single Subject Methods - History and Social Science focuses on the examination of curriculum, pedagogy, and strategies that make history and social science (HSS) learning available to all students, how students develop deep understanding in HSS and how assessments help guide meaningful instructional practices.
Learning is framed as goal-oriented expertise capable of empowering diverse students and K-12 classroom communities. This course is available to in-service teachers who want to add HSS to their existing credential.
An important component of our California Methods Courses offering, this course is approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) to fulfill pedagogy (methods of teaching) requirements after passing the appropriate CSET exam(s). When an in-service teacher is adding a new credential type or single subject content area to an existing Multiple Subject or Single Subject teaching credential, a methods of teaching course must be completed. See more information from the CTC: Adding a Teaching or Content Area to Multiple and Single Subject Credentials (CL-621a).
Prior to enrolling, please consult with your school or district employer and/or the UC Merced Credential Analyst to ensure you take the correct course and have the appropriate requirements relevant to your existing teaching credential.
