Safe Learning Environment
We strive to provide a safe learning environment. You can contribute to the safety of you and your students by doing the following:
- Program these Emergency and Non-Emergency Phone Numbers into your cell phone for the location where you are teaching.
- Review the Emergency Information and Procedures found in this emergency.ucmerced.edu
- Know where the emergency contact numbers are posted (on the wall in each classroom near the entrance for your convenience).
- Familiarize yourself with the evacuation procedures that are posted on the wall in the classroom.
Immediate Concerns
- If it’s an emergency, call 911.
- If necessary, but not an emergency, call the police (numbers are posted at each site).
- Should you find anything of concern that is not immediate, contact your Program Coordinator
- If it is after-hours and the PACE academic offices are closed, call the number associated with the facility or notify on-site personnel who can help if you have a last-minute concern involving your teaching.
- As the instructor, students will look to you to take the lead in an emergency.
- Introduce yourself to security and center staff and call upon them when needed.
- In the event of an earthquake, instruct students to duck and cover and evacuate when and if it is safe to do so.
- If you notice something unusual about a student, but you are unsure of what to do, please contact the Program Coordinator and Center Staff, if appropriate.
Student, Employee, and Volunteer Incident Form
- If anyone has an accident while onsite for a PACE class or while on a class field trip or site visit, have them report the facts via the UC Merced Incident Form.
- It is strongly recommended that you keep a blank form with you during the term and with you on any field trips and site visits.
- Please contact your Program Coordinator to relay an account of the event as soon as possible. He or she can follow up with the appropriate parties to make sure that a thorough report is submitted.
Personal Emergency
- Instructors are encouraged to work with their students to make appropriate accommodation due to emergency situations.
- Instructors are required to communicate any changes to their scheduled classes with the students and Program Coordinator as soon as possible.
- For classes that are unable to be rescheduled, instructors should contact the Program Coordinator for alternative accommodation.
